The 2 S - Saree & Sacrifice

Sacrifice is a very popular concept in India specially if it is done by a woman. Wife sacrificying her career for husband - wife becomes an idol, husband sacrifying his career for wife - husband is considered not a man enough; as if sacrifice is women's proprietary right. Saree is considered to be the purest form of dress even though it is not enough to cover the entire body. Saree is traditional and an expression of elegancy. Hence in most communities saree is worn during marriage, also newly weds are expected to wear saree at least few days post marriage. Strangly dhoti for men couldnt reach the Saree level. Dhotis are not normally worn by men post marriage, though sometimes dhotis are worn during pujas but mostly by the priest who wears it as part of his profession. Dhotis are not compulsion for men post marriage because of the simple reason that dhotis are neither convenient nor comfortable for daily use. Saree system on the other hand has been popularized by women wh...

Marriage & Social Stigma

Image
"MARRIAGE" a girl hears it in very early days of her life when she is a kid, she gets to know the meaning of the same. The meaning changes and evolves though as she grows up. MARRIAGE- Its a scary word for a teenager girl who is told every time she scores badly in exam that she might have to end up in early marriage if she fails in her career. MARRIAGE- It's even more scary for an adult woman who has just completed 25years of her life and she is under constant pressure of different sorts from different types of people who surround her- be it her parents/ relatives or any elderly people whom she meets. She has to answer that question "When will you get married?" MARRIAGE - How is it for a married woman? For this please read below: Caution: The journey penned down here is very personal. Drawing general opinion based on this wont be right. As I grew up when I used to spend time in playing, I had heard people telling my parents "Start teaching h...

Faith Belief and Brands......

Image
" If you believe you can, you can! " We have heard this may be n number of times. We are also aware of the fact that every human has huge potential inside him which makes him capable of doing such things which seem to be impossible to other people. The only difference between an achiever and an average person is the achiever believed that he can. The strength of the belief not only makes a human to survive for several days without proper food and water (if we see life of pi movie) or taking example from real life - Prahlad Jani who could survive without food and water for several days as he believed that goddess Amba/Durga sustains him.  Without questioning the existence of God or without going into the controversy of religious beliefs and customs and rituals, it wont be wrong to state that ...

Breaking the Perception

Image
It is a known fact that one of the basic need of human, beside food, clothing and shelter is the need for power. We all want to be powerful in some form or the other. And power is not enough until it is being acknowledged by others. What happened? Too much theory????? Too much of copied & pasted lines from the college books? Well, lets make this simple, then! In your school days, were there any students who used to study for hours but still would deny the fact and would tell that they had watched cartoon network or were busy playing for hours? Did you meet one of those who would say they it's a surprise for them how they scored so much in exams as they didn't study many of the chapters or they just glanced through the pages the night before the exam; while the truth is they slogged their asses off for the entire year. But still they would not admit so as they want to be perceived as intelligent mortals. Again in school, there were a group of students who used to score ...

How to lose weight without exercise

Image
My school friends have seen me to be a plumpy girl. Now when they see me it is a shock for them. And all these have happened without gym, without any exercise; I did neither cycling nor swimming for these.  Well before revealing the secrets let me give a brief description of myself. I come from a typical bengali family (ghoti or pure Indian to be specific) where sugar is an essential part of every recipe that is prepared at home, where sweets (which includes different types of sweets/ misti and misti doi or sweet curd) is an   indispensable part of refrigerator. On almost every sunday the breakfast consists of oil dripped luchi, equally oily begun vaja along with alur dom and of course jalebi, rasgolla and gulab jamun, and (my favorite) rasomalai and laddu :D. Chutney and payesh will be the part of dessert throughout the year, of course the ingredients vary. During summer it would be aamer or jolpai er chutney and during winter the payesh would be of nolen gur. Then diff...

Evaluation of Devaluation

Year: 1952 Place: Kolkata 1 American Dollar= 4.97 Indian Rupees Price of 1kg of fresh hilsa fish was 1 rupee, the price of 2 pieces of samosa was 1paisa, tution fee was 20rupees a month. Though the colleges were co-educational, girls wouldn't even look at guys, talking to a guy was a sin. The packet ghee concept was not even there, neither there was need to put the label of pure ghee to emphasis that the ghee is pure. Letters were the mode of communication for an average Indian. Things were pretty much slow not only in terms of communication and growth but also there was no dynamism. People used to talk for hours when they met, without any hurry to move away from that place because of other priorities in life. There was not any priorities as such except the motto to lead a peaceful happy family life. Eating kachuri with hot jalebis on a sunday breakfast was a luxury and listening to radio about the live commentary of football match  and having a vebal fight over who is the bet...

A mother's womb

Image
It is said the ultimate success of a woman lies in her motherhood, for which the nature has created her. When a child is born it gives joy to the mother not only because this is her creation (partial though :P) but also because she has nurtured it by feeding it internally for 9 months. The joy comes from the fact that that little creation of her is so much dependent on her, when the baby wakes up its eyes desperately search for the mother, the only person with whom it feels secured with. The joy comes when the child sees the mother it smiles and that smile has no hidden agenda, no selfish motive, the smile is only because the child is seeing the mother. When the child tries to grab the mother's fingers with its tiny fingers or touches her neck with its little fingers that gives the mother an out of the world happiness, which has no comparison. The child is dependent on the mother till the time it can walk on its own. As the child grows up, the dependency decreases and it enters...
